John Cooper - stand-up comedian, improviser and compere

John Cooper is a stand-up comedian, improviser and compere based in Salford, part of the thriving Manchester comedy scene. He started performing in 2003 and quickly built a reputation on the northern club circuit for a warm, quick-witted, audience-led style, honed further through his work as a member of the ComedySportz Manchester improv troupe. Alongside straight stand-up he has developed a well-loved character act, Danny Pensive, whose off-kilter, gently surreal take on very British subjects has become a fixture of clubs across the country. Reviewers have praised his flawless audience interaction and infectious, deadpan delight on stage.

Cooper has clocked up hundreds of stand-up gigs across the UK and taken two solo shows to the Edinburgh Fringe, including Danny Pensive's Map Of Britain in 2011, and has supported touring television names on the road. His writing has reached television and radio, including a stint as sketch writer for BBC Radio Newcastle's Jesting About and an appearance on BBC Two's The Speaker, and he competed in ITV and FHM's Stand Up Hero. He is a past winner of the Cofilmic Sketch Writing Competition and a City Life Comedian Of The Year finalist, and in 2022 he took to the TEDx Warrington stage.

Two decades of stage time across improv, character comedy and straight stand-up have given Cooper an unusually broad toolkit, and it shows in how comfortably he handles a room, whether that is a rowdy club crowd or a corporate audience that needs careful handling. His audience-interaction skills, built through years of improv, make him a reliable compere as well as a strong headline act, and his warm, sharp material travels well to clean and family-friendly bills. A dependable, versatile booking for clubs, corporate events and private functions alike.
